Can't sleep ... again

Another night exactly like every other :(
Although I cough all day, the second I try to get some sleep, it starts off big style. Mum is laying on her air mattress pretending she doesn't mind being awake. We've been to the doctor today and I now have a variety of things that are going to calm the coughing and knock me out ... except they're not working and we're all awake.
I've got to be up early to go down to hospital so that'll be great. A million weeks after mum mentioned my line splitting, they are going to do something with it.
Last night I had a great time at my local cinema, the Apollo in Barrow. They'd arranged it as a surprise for me and I even got to go in a limo! Along with Team Alice, I watched "The Bucket List". I didn't cry, but I caught a few out lol. Small town, big heart!
Then tonight, I went with Milly, Clarissa, Sammi and Megs for a girly photo shoot at Kells Studio in Barrow - that was fan dab and Dawn managed to make me look quite good too (I usually look half asleep and I never wear make up).  Mabel managed to crawl her way into some of the photos so they will be special. We had so much fun!
More big news is that my mug is available to order on the Emma Bridgewater website ... so if you want one, hurray!
Got to go because I'm coughing so much that this is taking me hours to type.

Alice, I wanted to ask -- if it's not too nosy -- are you a Christian? Having Jesus in my life has helped me to get through tough times before, and I was just wondering :)

  10. Hi Alice, this may sound silly but it works for my children when they cough at night. Before bed you rub a thick amount of vicks vapor rub on your feet then put socks on. I dont know why it works but it does.

  11. Alice,
I've been reading over your blog this evening. I just want to send you many heartfelt best wishes. You seem to be a very sweet, strong and brave young lady. Hope that you get some sleep! Keep believing young lady! And good luck on your bucket list chase!

  12. Ahhh well at least you'll get some sleep while they take your line out. My son had a port for 8 years, he had it taken out in December and he asked if he could keep and now he shows it to everyone which never fails to cause much disgust and some queasiness :-). I posted a pic of it on my Facebook page and my sister thought it was an iPod earbud!
The mug is lovely by the way. You did a great job with it. And I'm glad you got to have your cinema screening. I've seen that movie a couple of times and I blubbed both times.

  13. Alice, I'm so sorry about your coughing. I sure wish they could give you something that would help and you could get some sleep. Good luck at the doctors.

  14. Dear lovely Alice,
I'm sorry you are having trouble sleeping, what a pain it must be coughing all the time :( I'm not too sure if this will help but when I can't sleep well I think of my favorite book (Harry potter :) and imagine myself in the stories....sounds a little crazzzzy but it's fun and usually makes me nod off :) wishing you sweetdreams!
    Love and hugs Chris x

  15. Ooh, I had a lung infection once where I coughed that badly! I'm so sorry! I don't know what you're allowed, but a winning combo for me was Mucinex D (not DM) and camphor in a vaporizer all night. Good luck getting sleep! I'll be thinking about you. *HUG*

  16. HELP PLEASE!

First, I am so sorry you are unable to sleep! I hope that by the time you see this comment you had some peaceful sleep (Mum too). I live in the USA (IL) and I went too buy TWO of your mugs. However ("color me stupid"), but I can't figure out how much the mug is in USA Currency? I feel like a complete idiot, asking, but if I know for certain, I can decide if I want to order FOUR instead of TWO. My brother is currently undergoing Cancer treatment and since I can't be listed as a Bone Marrow Bonor (or blood for that matter); I wanted to find a way to support your cause. So, with family/friend's birthdays approaching it would be a perfect gift. I hope somebody can help me out! My thoughts and prayers are with your family, always! Best Wishes! <3, A Supporter in IL!

  17. Hello Alice,

I'm sorry that you haven't been feeling well. Hopefully the cough medicine just takes a little while to start working so that you can be sleeping normally and feeling good during the day.

Congrats on crossing off two more items on your list! Both of those sound like a lot of fun. I bet the pictures turned out really well. And I love your new mug! I hope I can get one to support the cause.

Sleep well and good luck with everything!

  21. Hi Alice! I am from Texas. I read your blog every single time you write an entry. I had a son that passed away after a very difficult journey. He is my hero. You have joined right up there with him. I think of him so often and how he was so full of joy and left that as his legacy for us to hold to. I see those very same qualities in you! Though cancer and disease is so unfair, I honestly believe only the best children deal with it because you have a strength in you to endure it with beauty that changes the world for the better. Just know I celebrate every bucket list you check off and I pray every single one is met. I know you are having a hard night. I am so sorry you are coughing so much. And I know you feel bad for your mum. Just know, when she says she doesn't mind... she really doesn't. There is no place she would rather be than with you when you need her. I know because I was the same way. I pray for you all the time and tonight, I will pray for the coughing to ease and for you to rest!

  30. Morning Alice, hopefully you're still in bed catching up on your sleep, but more than likely you'll be up and about for the hospital visit that you mentioned.
It looks like there was a few of us up and about last night (wishing we were sleeping!). I was awake too, but working nightshift on an oil rig, at least I get to go to bed now. The bravery that you are showing, given the condition, is quite humbling. I know many people have already said this in the many replies that you have had to your blog posts, they really mean it!

I'll sign off now for the time being, looking forward to your next installment.....

  32. Ouch hon! Not being able to sleep is horrible.
I remember I suffered the most terrible cough once. As soon as I started to tilt my body backwards as if to lay down, I would start choking. :(
And, the more you get annoyed with it, the worse it gets, as your chest tightens up.
Have you tried meditation when that happens? It worked for me. Closing my eyes, focusing on slow breathing, then slowely painting a picture in my mind of my favourite place. It really helped.

  58. Alice - your Bridgewater mug is GORGEOUS! I can't wait to get mine. I can't believe how talented you are - I love the colours, I love the little yellow dog, congratulations. I hope you raise tons of money for the cause.

It SUCKS that you're having a hard time sleeping at the moment. Zopiclone is a pretty good sleeper, although it will depend what other meds your on as to whether you can take it. Also, Kava extract is wonderful for relaxation (and a nicer, more natural alternative).

Is there any way your mum could help give you a eucalyptus nasal steam before bed?

Oh dear, you've been given so much advice already sometimes I wonder whether you get a chance to read all these messages from your adoring public. We all think you're so wonderful Alice and we all wish we could help in some way.

Next time I give blood I'm asking about the bone marrow registry in NZ. You're amazing lovely-lady. I hope you get some sleep soon. Kia Kaha (forever/stay strong).

  70. Hello Alice,

Mandeep from India. I have been following your blog for about a week. Hope your cough is better now. Anyway, here is what I usually do when I have bad cough. Smash some fresh ginger, boil it in a cup of water for 5 minutes. Mix quarter teaspoon of honey, stir well, now sip little & slowly. The idea is to let the warm ginger honey juice to linger a bit around your throat to give it time to do the good work. I am not sure if this homemade remedy will have any reaction with any of the medicines you are talking right now, so be advice, please consult your doctor before you try it.

Do let me know if it work for you (I hope it does!). It works for me every time. ..

    Peace… Love . . .. .

I was reading the comments from an earlier post, and I saw someone mention my itty bitty town! Turns out one of your commentors is not only from the same miniscule town as me, but might even go to my church! I thought that was pretty funny; what are the odds, right?
Next time I see her, I'm going to ask if she knows you and find out if she is indeed the woman I'm thinking of.

    God bless you & yours,
    ZG

  93. Not being able to sleep due to coughing totally sucks but having your own cinema screening is uber cool! Like many others, I'm love to read about you ticking things off your list and if you carry on at this rate, you'll need to update with some more stuff.

Afraid I have no surefire way of stopping the coughing (ryhming unintentional) but I do remember as a child trying to count sheep kept me awake as I didn't want to leave any of them out! D'oh...

  94. I have only just found your blog and do hope you managed to get some sleep last night. You sound such a brave young lady, I do wish there was something I could do to help you get better. Your family must be very proud of you, my love to all of you.

  95. Alice I look up to you I'm only ten and I heard about you in first news. I have prayed for you because you are one of my role models. My sister is fifteen and I think what it would be like if she was ill and I really hope that you get better!

Ps Sorry but I can't give bone marrow because: a) I'm ten. b) I have a bleeding disorder so they wouldn't accept my bone marrow becaause it's manky. (what has bone marrow got to do with blood?)

  105. Hi Alice,

Just wanted to let you know I've ordered a mug, and it'll be (part of) my mum's birthday present later in the year. It's our first piece of Emma Bridgewater, so maybe it will be the first of many!

Am so pleased the cinema outing was was fun, and that you got your photograph taken - I'm sure you looked great!

I hope you've managed to get a little sleep, and as someone whose mum has to sleep with me, don't worry, you're mum really doesn't mind the sleepless nights with you!

  111. Hi Alice! This is the first time I visit your blog. I loved it! I once had something similar to a buckets list and was able to do many things :P (definitely you have a greater imagination!) But the best thing I ever did was to decide to know God better and to receive His love. I pray that you can talk to Him and discover how amazing you are for Him, and how much He loves you and cares for you and both of you get to be the best friends ever. You are really a wonderful girl, and an incredible person! Big hug and blessings!

  117. Hi Alice,
SHUT UP you swam with sharks??? Get out!!

I saw Jaws when it came out a hundred years ago. My mother let my sister and go alone to see it. To this day we wish we hadn't. My sister and I are both still afraid of the water!! I swear even the deep end in a pool still freaks me out......and a lake forget about it!!!

My name is Jane and I live in Golden, Colorado, USA.
    Nice to meet you!

He too was a fighter, but he wasn't able to get started on a bucket list because of the effects of chemo. I am SO glad you are setting out to achieve as many of your goals and dreams as you can!! Truly inspiring. :)

  123. i really think you should be researching alternative cancer cures instead of wasting all this huge amount of time on collecting randoms people sympathies and trying to become famous.

you have become famous but will still end up dead famous.

just type it into google.alternative cancer cures or some variation thereof.read other peoples blogs and experiences.loads on youtube too.

many people have had success with various treatments but of course the established medical/pharmaceutical complex does not allow it to become mainstream as they cannot be patented into huge markup money spinners.

i could give you some links but it might be best if you invested some time and energy in doing your own research as free things are seldom appreciated and often resented.

you have already become famous but will still end up dead famous.thats the brutal truth.
i pull no punches nor apologize for it

i take it you still want to live?

    just type it into google.

on ats the a to z of cancer cures and treatment which have been deliberately ignored by the mainstream establishment as they can' be patented and would compete with the unsuccessful chemo...

watch the rick simpson cancer story on youtube.the most useful hour of your life.

the bicarbonate of soda treatment again on blogs and youtube

  130. Hey Alice!

I don't remember how I stumbled upon your blog, but it was shortly after you started. I immediately sent a request to be signed up as a bone marrow donor, and yesterday I went and gave some blood to finalize the registration. I feel like it's the least I can do, as after it's done I'm registered and only contacted if needed. But when that happens I will hopefully help someone that can be helped only by me.

I hope you'll be able to catch some sleep tonight knowing you've made the world a better place!
