Oh dear and I thought that I was just doing a little blog for a few friends! Thank you so much for all your lovely messages to me. I don't sleep very well and I sat up all night reading them as they came in from all over the planet, every single one, and they have made me smile so much so that is a good thing.
There isn't a Paypal or Donate button on here, because I didn't mean for this to be such a big thing. It was just so that I could write on here and do the things I wanted to do and my friends could read about it them, which I'm still going to do. It's nice you're all here too but I really don't want any money giving and we've actually been offered so many wonderful experiences that I've definitely got a lot of exciting days ahead. My mum was trying to reply to everyone and it all got a bit mad and now we have a little team of friends helping us out so that we can get back to everyone.
I'm excited about the things I am going to be doing, but the biggest thing has to be all the people who are joining bone marrow donation schemes because of me. I read on someones post that it is really painful. Well, mostly bone marrow is taken as cells via a needle and I have had it done. I was 13 when I had my first transplant and because they used my own cells, I had to have them taken out (they call it harvested) and then stored and put back in some months later after more chemo. I'm not just saying this, but it really didn't hurt at all. I had a tiny bruise from the needles and that was about it. I was a bit tired too but I'm always tired so that may not have been the cells.
So, I was never begging and I don't need any money but I do love to get your messages and I hope you'll follow my blog and keep leaving me a message. I will take a camera with me wherever I go and I'll post photos of everything I do. In return, you can keep asking everyone you bump into to join the bone marrow donation schemes in your country.

I recently lost my mum to cancer but she was told several times over the last 8 bonus years that she only had a matter of months left - it is amazing what the power of your mind and the love of your family can do. She was a strong and determined lady, just like you, so keep fighting sweetheart and I truly hope you can post many wonderful pictures of your adventures on here.
A message mum left was "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" and I know you would want the same and will raise many smiles. If you do lose your battle one day, my mum will be there to give you a hug.

My arm has been broken beyond repair and I got bone marrow put in as it was the only thing believed to heal my arm.
ReplyDeleteAfter the operation I was left with a huge scar on my hip, and couldnt walk or properly use the bathroom for a week, as well as unable to walk the same for a couple months.
But i still think its worth it to help out and donate as without it Id be without an arm.
So please help out, minor pain, vs helping someone have the basic needs in life.

ReplyDeleteI found your blog early this morning before I went to class. After reading the initial post, I was floored. Your outlook on life and ambitious goals astound me.
I lost my mother to cancer when I was 5. I really didn't know her well, but she is one of the biggest reasons I want to one day become a doctor, possibly an oncologist.
Upon reading this blog, you will become another reason. Your perseverance in the face of the news you were told shows that it is possible to keep fighting. You not only are fighting life, but fighting to live-two very different concepts. You, with your Bucket List, are choosing to live. To live a true life that many people would have given up on. Most people would think "what's the point?" But you're different and you're only 13! You're choosing to do SOMETHING. And that's much more than some people accomplish in their entire lifetime.
You are a treasure to this world.

I'm now 21, and they keep saying 6 more months every 6 months. I have stopped listening. I know, it will happen when it happens, and it better not happen until I see everything I want to see.
ReplyDeleteOn a second note, Make-A-Wish could sponsor a trip for you to Disney. My process with them was super easy. They have an area in one of the water parks that lets you swim with sharks and sting rays(they are small, but still sharks! ^_^) Plus, I'm pretty sure they have a program set up with Sea World where you get to be a "Dolphin Trainer for the Day" type of thing. There's two in one day. =D

Alice, you are such an inspiration! Reading your posts help me to accept the reality of my brother's cancer. You are so strong and positive. He is too but your youth and determination are so touching to me. So many people working on getting your bucket list taken care of. ReplyDeleteIt is people like you that made me start my bucket list! I started my list after a terminal cancer teen that I took care of told me her wish and dreams. I am a nurse that works with cancer kiddos like you. :) You guys inspire me, and I am so blessed and honored to have my job!
I even joined the bone marrow registry and was a match for someone and donated (it is a little painful...but the rewards last a lifetime). You are building a legacy for yourself, and have already touched so many lives.

ReplyDeleteAs for the rest of the list- have you heard of the Make*A*Wish foundation? (I'm fairly you sure you have, but it's better not to assume.) If you're not already registered with them, do so. They could probably help out some of your bucket list items. But more importantly than the bucket list, I hope things take a turn for the better. ReplyDeleteI sit here not quite knowing what to say, but for some reason feel so compelled to write you.
I wish I could help you in some way, unfortunately I'm just little old me! I will re-tweet you and do my best, though.
I know photographers in my region (Yorkshire) who would be willing to set up the photoshoot for you, but it's a little far from you.
Try local colleges or universities that offer photography courses; I'm sure there will be students there who would be willing to do it for free, and to a professional standard!
There are also whale watching trips available in Whitby in the late summer, a number of Basking Sharks also turn up there too! :)

ReplyDeleteWe know you aren't begging it's just a way for us to feel like we're helping you out a bit especially as your list isn't all about you but actually wanting to make a positive difference to the world. You're obviously a bright and courageous girl and that speaks to people.
If you don't want to accept money to fulfill your bucket list why not ask people to donate to a charity in your name Anthony Nolan or cancer research or even medecins sans frontieres or something like that?
If a good person is someone who leaves the world better than they found it then you are a good person. If as many people sign up to the bone marrow donors register because of you as I think their are then you will have done more to help others in fifteen years than many people do in their entire lives. If any of those donors help save a life it will be because of you 'he who saves one life saves the world entire' (it's from the talmud, one of the jewish religious texts) but that's you Alice you're saving the entire world.

ReplyDeleteMy heart goes out to you. My lovely daughter passed away just two months ago after having a bone marrow transplant have got leukemia. BUT the transplant worked, and her cells were growing but she got pneumonia and sadly this worsened. Like you, she was a real inspiration and got loads of people to sign up to be donors.
It is people like you who are angels and families like yours who know what it is to love and be loved. Wishing you well and continue to be inspiring xxx Amy's mum

ReplyDeleteMy hubby joined the register earlier this year. I've had leukaemia 4 times and am on life extending treatment currently.
ReplyDeleteI've given bone marrow 3 times for myself and I have to say it can be quite painful but it doesn't last long. Stiffness wears off after a few days.
I hope you manage to achieve a lot of your list and look forward to seeing the pictures.
Please contact the Youth Cancer Trust and organise a stay with them. You can take someone with you and it's the most amazing experience. They look after patients across the whole spectrum and have a great team on hand.
I hope you have the chance to do as much as you can from your list... Stay strong. You´re such a lovely girl.

ReplyDeleteHi Alice! Your blog and bucket list has inspired me so much. You've actually given me hope. I've got Hodgekin's Lymphoma and also undergoing chemo, but unlike you who's been going through it for 4 years (!) I'm lucky that I'm only undergoing chemo for 6 months and I will hopefully have beaten cancer. It's not fair that a child as young as 15 is suffering through something like this but you're being so mature about it, it truly is amazing. You deserve as many things on your Bucket list to be granted as possible!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could donate blood, its the one thing I've wanted to do since I turned 17, but I found out that I can't due to the chemo. Although I've given bone marrow for samplin and it was the worst pain I have EVER felt, aha, I plan on finding out if I can donate, and I will ask to be put out if I can!
I really do wish you all the luck, and if theres anything any of us can do for you, I'm pretty sure we'll ALL be more than happy to help. Take care, good luck with the Bucket List and thank you for reminding me that no matter how long, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

A friend of mine, Ellery Neiderer who is about to turn 14 is also fighting cancer. I hope you're able to do everything on your bucket list (and I hope you recover enough somehow to do the international ones too--I hear Kenya is very nice~). I know you said you don't have a Donate button up here b/c you don't need any money, but I know I'd like to at least donate for a part of your purple Apple iPad (you should get iPad 2, it's much better). My sister and I bought one for our dad for his 60th birthday last month and he LOVED it. It was a bit of a stretch for us, but I'm really glad we did it after seeing how much it cheered him up. He (thankfully) doesn't have any type of terminal disease like you, but he's generally a bit depressed so it was nice to see something really make him smile. I don't know if an iPad 2 would make you quite as happy, but I've seen its effect once and hope you could get one too if it will cheer you up as much. Anyway, wishing you the very best!

Reading your blog has made me cry, smile and laugh all at once :) I hope you get to do all the things on your bucket list and more. A friend of mine works for Emma Bridgewater and she posted the link to this page, if it goes up for auction (or however you're going to do it) I will definitely be bidding!

ReplyDeleteAfter my second BMT, I had Grade IV GVHD in my liver and ended up being given 72 hours to live without a new liver, so I briefly understood your situation. To face your own mortality at such a young age is horrifying but I can see that you're incredibly strong and I wish you all the love in the world, and to your family and friends, and I hope you achieve as many of your objectives as possible.
